TURKEY MUST RECOGNIZE THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

PRIOR TO ITS ADMISSION TO THE EUROPEAN UNION

-------------

STATUS

------------

On November 14th, the General Assembly of the European Parliament is scheduled to adopt the "Report on Turkey’s Application for Accession to the European Union," (Report A5-02-97/2000, by Philippe Morillon). Several amendments regarding the Armenian Genocide will be presented for inclusion in the final report.

On October 10th, during preliminary examination by the European Parliament Committees Foreign Affairs, Human Rights, Common Security, and Defence, the author of the report, M. Morillon, refused to include Turkey's recognition of the Armenian Genocide as a precondition for that country's admission into the EU. Apparently under pressure by threats from the Turkish government, M. Morillon refused the amendments suggested by three politcal parties, and pulled the compromise amendment he was prepared to introduce. Similarly, other Parliamentarians prepared to raise the Armenian Genocide recognition issue, including Mr. Cohn Bendit, also succumbed to Turkish threats. The Report was finally adopted by a majority vote with no reference to the Armenian

Genocide.

The 1987 European Parliament resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide called upon Turkey to acknowledge this crime against humanity as a precondition to being admitted to the European Union.
